Mysterious spikes damaged tires on Paso Robles roads. Now they’re in SLO too
The metal spikes that were mysteriously puncturing car tires in Paso Robles have officially made their way to other parts of San Luis Obispo County.
The spikes — identified as “caltrops” — were most recently found in San Luis Obispo, the SLO Police Department announced on X on Thursday.
“The Paso Robles Police Department recently reported metal spikes disabling vehicles in their community, and these spikes have now been found in SLO,” the department wrote.
Police encouraged anyone who finds a spike in their tire after driving in SLO to report it to the non-emergency line at 805-781-7312.
The spikes have been a source of confusion for authorities in Paso Robles, who recently issued a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case after an ambulance was disabled after hitting one while responding to a service call.
Paso Robles police said in the news release announcing the reward that the department had documented more than 40 instances of car tires sustaining damage after hitting a caltrop.
Drivers affected in Paso Robles were encouraged to report incidents involving the spikes to the local police department at 805-237-6464, or by filing a report online at prcity.com/671/File-a-Police-Report.
Anyone with information about the spread of the spikes was encouraged to report it to authorities immediately.
