Semi-truck crash spills hazardous material along SLO County road
An overturned semi-truck pulling a trailer spilled hazardous materials along a road in rural San Luis Obispo County on Monday morning, according to a California Highway Patrol news release.
Around 8:35 a.m., California Highway Patrol officers received a report of a vehicle overturned off the roadway on Chimney Rock Road east of Cypress Mountain Drive near Lake Nacimiento, the news release said.
Upon arriving on the scene, officers determined Luis Hernandezlopez, 29, of Bakersfield was driving a Peterbilt semi-truck towing a trailer of powdered limestone east on Chimney Rock Road at an unsafe speed, according to the release.
Hernandezlopez took a curve in the roadway too fast, causing the truck’s tires to break traction from the asphalt, slide off the south edge of the road and overturn, the release said.
Powdered limestone and diesel fuel spilled from the trailer and truck onto the roadside, creating a hazardous materials incident, the release said.
Hernandezlopez suffered minor injuries, the release said. Chimney Rock Road was closed for approximately four hours on Monday for vehicle recovery and cleanup.
The crash is pending further investigation by the California Highway Patrol, but it was determined that alcohol and/or drugs were not factor.
