Cal Poly announces dates, expanded event schedule for this year’s Poly Royal Rodeo
Cal Poly’s famed Poly Royal Rodeo is returning to San Luis Obispo County in under two months — and this year’s rodeo comes with a few changes.
According to a news release from the university, the 83rd annual Poly Royal Rodeo will be held April 9-12 at the Cotton Rosser Rodeo Complex during the campus’ Open House.
This year, all four nights of the rodeo will feature performances, shows and competition, adding an extra evening of activities to the festivities, according to the release.
General admission events start Thursday, April 10, with the first Cal Poly Rodeo Showcase Performance and conclude Saturday, April 13, with the Poly Royal Rodeo Finals.
An additional rodeo showcase and Associated Students Inc.-sponsored concert exclusively for students is planned for Wednesday, April 9, according to the release.
As usual, the main event, the Poly Royal Rodeo, will feature top collegiate rodeo athletes from around the West Coast who have advanced to the championship round from the weekend’s earlier rounds, according to the release. Athletes can compete for championship titles in barrel racing, team roping, breakaway roping, tie down roping, saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, bull riding and steer wrestling.
Tickets will go on sale Wednesday, Feb. 19, starting at $50 for general admission and free for children age 5 and under, while student tickets for the Wednesday night performance will go on sale Tuesday, Feb. 18, according to the release.
All proceeds of the event will benefit the Cal Poly Rodeo Program, according to the release.
