Original story:
A slide has closed Highway 1 from the San Luis Obispo County line north into Monterey County on Thursday evening.
According to Caltrans, a 12-mile stretch of the highway was closed between Ragged Point in northern San Luis Obispo County and Gorda in southern Monterey County.
The agency said the closure was due to a “small slide covering the northbound lane on a blind curve.”
The slide was located roughly 2 miles north of the San Luis Obispo County line, according to a release.
Caltrans said crews will be out “at first light Friday morning” to assess the slide and clear debris from the lanes. An estimated time for reopening will be provided once those assessments are finished, the agency said.
The closure comes on the second day of a system of atmospheric-river-fueled storms that drenched much of the Central Coast this week.
According to the National Weather Service, Rocky Butte in northwestern San Luis Obispo County saw the most rain on the Central Coast as of early Thursday evening, recording 1.81 inches.
The agency warned rainfall was expected to increase across much of the region throughout the night.
The latest closure is not the only in effect on the oft-traveled roadway.
A large segment of Highway 1 has been closed in the Big Sur area thanks to difficult road repairs at the Regent’s Slide location for nearly a year.
