Highway 1 reopened after slide near SLO County blocked lanes during rainstorms

Highway 1 has reopened after a slide closed a stretch of the road Thursday night.

According to Caltrans, a “small slide covering the northbound lane on a blind curve” occurred in Monterey County roughly two miles north of the San Luis Obispo County line Thursday.

The slide came on the second day of a storm system that drenched SLO County.

It closed a 12-mile stretch of road between Ragged Point and Gorda.

After 9 a.m. Friday, Caltrans announced that the highway was reopened.

“Crews were on scene at first light and cleared debris from the roadway which included a 5 foot diameter boulder,” according to a news release. “Crews then inspected and assessed the remainder of the closure area before reopening the roadway.”

The communities of Ragged Point, San Simeon and Cambria in SLO County will be accessible to drivers.
