Looking for a new job in San Luis Obispo County?

The state of California is hiring employees across the county for full-time positions ranging from engineers to pharmacists and medical assistants.

State jobs are known for offering competitive benefits and enrollment in the state’s public pension plan.

Search through some of the latest state jobs available in SLO County on the CalCareers website, as of Wednesday, Feb. 12:

Certified nursing assistant | Permanent, full time

  • Department: Correctional Health Care Services
  • Salary: $3,752 to $4,699 per month
  • The certified nursing assistant’s main job is to provide nursing care.

    The nursing assistant helps the provider or nurse examining and treating patients, in addition to motivating and helping patients develop self-care techniques.

    The application period closes on Monday, Feb. 24.

    Chief engineer II | Permanent, full time

    • Department: Military
    • Salary: $6,783 to $8,665 per month

    Under the direction of the Department of Public Works chief of plant operations, the chief engineer supervises staff in the day-to-day operations, maintenance and repair of the heating, ventilating, refrigeration, and air-conditioning systems, auxiliary electrical plants and other mechanical and power equipment of state use buildings.

    Dietetic technician | Permanent, full time

  • Department: State Hospitals
  • Salary: $3,800 to $4,760 per month



  • The dietetic technician is responsible for preparing weekly diet menus, as well as deciding on menu changes. Other duties include processing diet orders and composing modified diet slips for those with specialized diets.

    The dietetic technician also completes data entry into the food service software system and assists clinical dietitians.

    The application period closes on Saturday, Feb. 23.

    Engineering geologist | Permanent, full time

    • Department: State Water Resources Control Board
    • Salary: $3,983 to $4,723 per month

    The engineering geologist implements permits and programs for construction activities that help restore water quality, providing technical assistance at construction sites and industrial facilities.

    The engineering geologist is also responsible for collecting samples during site investigations and preparing reports on those visits.

    Other duties include analyzing technical data.

    The position may be eligible for a hybrid work schedule.

    Highway maintenance worker | Permanent, full time

    • Department: Transportation
    • Salary: $6,299 to $11,859 per month

    The highway maintenance worker is responsible for maintaining highways, freeways and bridges in SLO County.

    Duties include operating vehicles, construction and landscape equipment. The employee may have to respond to emergency calls and occasionally work overtime, nights and weekends.

    Positions are available in Cambria and Shandon. The application period closes on Thursday, Feb. 20.

    Medical assistant | Permanent, full time

    • Department: Correctional Health Care Services
    • Salary: $3,820 to $5,024 per month

    The medical assistant supports primary care providers in a variety of health care settings.

    The employee is responsible for performing some patient procedures, supporting daily clinic operations, communicating with patients and team members and performing administrative duties.

    Physical therapist I | Permanent, full time

    • Department: Correctional Health Care Services
    • Salary: $5,544 to $8,225 per month

    The physical therapist provides active, passive and restorative therapeutic treatments to patients at the California Men’s Colony in addition to giving information to patients about the relevance and significance of physical therapy exercises.

    Duties include maintaining the safety and security of persons at the correctional facility.

    Recreation therapist | Permanent, full time

    • Department: Correctional Health Care Services

    • Salary: $8,169 to $9,615 per month

    Under the general direction of the senior psychologist or supervising psychiatric social worker, the recreation therapist develops, implements, and evaluates therapeutic recreation programs for patients within California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation institutions.

    Other duties include instructing and motivating patients in individual and group recreation therapy; monitoring and documenting treatment progress, and working with other health care providers to share recreational therapy assessment information and incorporate therapeutic recreational activities into treatment plans.

    This position is based at Atascadero State Hospital.

    Staff psychiatrist | Permanent, full time

  • Department: State Hospitals
  • Salary: $23,347 to $28,791 per month

  • The staff psychiatrist performs psychiatric evaluations, provides clinical leadership of the treatment team and writes orders for admission, transfer, discharge, medications, restraints, seclusion and suicide precautions.

    Other duties include meeting monthly with patients, providing daily sick calls for patients and evaluating and documenting assaultive incidents and suicidal threats, attempts and self–harm behaviors.

    This position is limited to a 12-month term but may be extended at any time.

    Transportation engineer | Permanent, full time

  • Department: Transportation
  • Salary: $6,299 to $11,798 per month
  • The transportation engineer’s primary job is to use engineering knowledge and management skills to create plans, estimates, documents and presentations for state transportation projects.

    The employee takes part of an engineering team expected to follow through on transportation projects for statewide stakeholders and regional partners.

    The application period closes on Friday, Feb. 21.
