Update: Man who barricaded himself inside Arroyo Grande home was fleeing warrants, police say
Update, 5:30 p.m.:
A man has been taken into custody after he allegedly fled police officers serving a warrant and then barricaded himself inside an Arroyo Grande home on Friday evening.
According to Arroyo Grande Police Department Sgt. Jeff Corral, the incident began when a warrant was being served at a hotel across Highway 101 on Friday afternoon.
“Officers attempted to contact a known, wanted felony subject,” he told The Tribune. “Upon contact with him at one of our hotels locally, he foot bailed from our officer and ran across the freeway.”
Corral said with the help of numerous other local law enforcement agencies and a drone, officers were able to set up a perimeter and see the man in the backyard of a home on Orchard Street.
“With further drone search of the backyard, we noticed there was windows open, so believed that he made entry into the house,” he said.
Corral said law enforcement at the scene were then “able to clear the residence and contact him in the garage and take him into custody.”
There were no reported injuries to officers, though the man did state he may have had a seizure while inside the house, Corral said. He was transported to a local hospital to receive medical evaluation, Corral said.
The man’s name was not being released as of Friday evening, though Corral did note he was a resident of San Luis Obispo County. Police were not aware of any connection between him and the home on Orchard Street where he was taken into custody, Corral said.
Residents in the neighborhood of West Cherry Avenue, Arroyo Avenue, Pilgrim Way and Orchard Street were briefly told to shelter in place during the incident.
That order has since been lifted, according to an AlertSLO notification.
