Update: I-5 over Grapevine opens after snowstorm shut down freeway
A key stretch of Interstate 5 reopened after a snowstorm swept through Southern California, Caltrans said.
The California Department of Transportation closed the freeway around 12:15 a.m. Monday after snow and ice made the Grapevine impassable.
Caltrans announced I-5 was open to traffic at 11:42 a.m. Monday.
“Snow flurries have stopped and crews cleared lanes, ramps and center medians,” the state road agency said on X. “Crews laid out sand over the summit area for traction.”
Here’s what to know:
Where was I-5 closed?
I-5 was fully closed at the Tejon Pass between Parker Road in Castaic and Grapevine Road in Kern County most of Monday morning, according to Caltrans.
The major interstate was shut to southbound traffic from the border of Los Angeles and Kern counties to five miles south of the junction with Highway 99 at Grapevine Road, the state road agency said.
How long will freeway closure last?
“Both directions of I-5 are open through the Tejon Pass,” Caltrans announced shortly before noon on Monday.
The state road agency called on motorists to drive slowly through the area and check its website for future updates on road conditions.
