Dramatic fire video shows SLO County police officers rescuing man from burning trailer
The Grover Beach Police Department released a dramatic video on Monday of police officers rescuing a man from a trailer fire last week.
On Friday night, a portable propane tank heater ignited a fire in a travel trailer parked in Grover Beach, police said.
The fire was first reported at 5:48 p.m. at 1168 West Grand Ave, according to emergency response app PulsePoint.
When officers arrived on the scene, the trailer was ablaze and smoke billowed into the sky, a video posted on X showed.
A bystander rushed to the officer and told him that someone was stuck in the trailer.
The video shows the officer knocking on the window with no response, before asking the bystander again to confirm that there was someone inside.
Once he got confirmation, the officer smashed two windows open with his baton.
The resident then climbed out the window headfirst, and another officer caught him mid-air and carried him to safety, the video showed.
The man was sent to the hospital with minor injuries, Five Cities Fire Authority battalion chief Brian Salce previously told The Tribune.
Salce added that the other two nearby trailers were starting to “steam off and smoke” so the agency’s priority then became making sure those did not catch fire.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze by 6 p.m.
Besides Five Cities Fire Authority and the Police Department, Cal Fire and San Luis Ambulance also responded to the scene.
The Grover Beach Police Department urged people to ensure they have two clear exits from their residence and keep those exits clear.
Additionally, people should discuss and practice an evacuation plan with their household and “install and maintain smoke detectors and keep a fire extinguisher accessible,” the agency posted on X.
