Shop local, earn big: Score $20 gift cards for holiday purchases made in this SLO County city

‘Tis the season of gift-giving, but Atascadero shoppers will get a little something extra for themselves when they buy local for the holidays.

Starting Friday through Dec. 31, shoppers will earn a $20 gift card for every $100 spent at a participating business in Atascadero while supplies last, the city said in a news release.

From boutiques to breweries, locally-owned retailers, restaurants and service providers in Atascadero will qualify for the program, excluding grocery and hardware stores, gas stations, national chains, gas stations, fast food stops and pet stores.

“Shopping local is the gift that keeps on giving,” Atascadero Chamber of Commerce President Josh Cross said in the release. “Every purchase you make supports the families behind Atascadero’s businesses and their hardworking employees. Those dollars stay in our community, circulating to other local shops and restaurants, creating a powerful cycle of support strengthening our town.”

According to research from the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies, $68 for every $100 spent in your community stays in your community, compared to only $43 when spending the same amount at national big box stores like Target or Walmart, the release said.

“Supporting local businesses isn’t just making a purchase; it’s investing in the very heartbeat of our community,” vice president of membership Julie Matthews said in the release.

How can I participate in the Shop Local Bonus program?

Through Atascadero’s Shop Local Bonus program, every household has the opportunity to earn a maximum of two $20 gift cards from qualifying businesses.

However, rewards are first come, first serve, so get yours quick.

In order to redeem your rewards, save and submit your receipts from purchases made at qualifying stores in Atascadero. Make sure receipts are readable, itemized and include the date, name of the business and total amount spent.

Shoppers must spend at least $100 at a single business to earn a gift card for the store, but purchases can be cumulative, meaning they can be made at different times so long as they total $100 or more when combined.

Taxes, delivery fees and shipping costs are not counted toward the total purchase price.

The program ends Dec. 31, but gift cards might run out sooner, so act quickly.

Once qualifying purchases are made, receipts must be redeemed in-person at the Atascadero Chamber of Commerce office at 6907 El Camino Real Suite A, open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., for a maximum of two free gift cards per household.
