Cal Fire conducted a control burn in the hills between Harmony Headlands and the Estero Bluffs, sending up a plume of smoke that was visible from Highway 1 on Oct. 24, 2024.

A plume of smoke billowed across the sky between Cambria and Cayucos on Thursday — but there’s no need to worry.

Cal Fire and California State Parks conducted a prescribed burn of grassland and coastal shrub in northern San Luis Obispo County from Wednesday to Friday, according to a news release from State Parks.

People driving in the area could see the smoke from Highway 1, photos showed.

The burn was located in a 200-acre spot in the northern portion of Harmony Headlands State Park. The park was closed during the burn.

Firefighters also burned a 100-acre spot west of Cayucos Point in the Estero Bluffs State Park, but the park remained open.

Firefighters planned to ignite the fuel at about 7 a.m. each day, and each fire would be extinguished by about 5 p.m.

The goal of the burn was to “reduce fuel loads and fire hazards as well as enhance the health of the native plant communities, and aid in the control of non-native, woody species,” the news release said.
