GPS directions sent a semi truck off Highway 101 onto a precarious Cuesta Grade dirt road late Tuesday night — where the driver got stuck for about 10 hours while a tow truck tried to free it.

The semi truck was traveling north on the highway up the Cuesta Grade when the GPS apparently told the driver to turn onto Stagecoach Road, CHP Officer Trevor Ashby told The Tribune on Wednesday.

The uneven dirt road is not safe for a big rig to traverse, and the semi truck got stuck there at about 11:30 p.m., he said.

Photos of the incident show the truck’s trailer dangling over the side of the road.

CHP and a tow truck arrived at the scene to free to big rig.

After about 10 hours of work, the semi truck was finally back on the road at about 9:45 a.m., Ashby said.

The CHP posted a warning on Facebook for other semi-truck drivers in light of the incident:

“Please do not follow GPS directions onto Stagecoach Road, stay on Highway 101 Cuesta Grade,” the post said. “This will not end well for any larger vehicles.”
