Cal Fire rescued a person stuck in the water below a cliff at Pirate’s Cove on Friday afternoon — though the rescue involved a lot fewer people than emergency responders initially anticipated.

At about 12:57 p.m., Cal Fire launched an effort to rescue the person in the water, Cal Fire spokesperson Ryan Grebe said.

After the emergency responders delivered the swimmer to shore, the person reported they had heard three other people in a nearby cave that was only accessible by water, he said.

Cal Fire sent swimmers and a drone to survey the cave and did not find anybody there, Grebe said.

Despite that, at about 2 p.m., the U.S. Coast Guard sent a helicopter and boat to keep searching for people in the caves per their policy, according to emergency scanner traffic.
