PG&E actually won’t shut off power to SLO County this weekend. What changed?

PG&E canceled a public safety power shutoff planned for Friday in eastern San Luis Obispo County thanks to improvements in the weather forecast.

The power shutoff would have impacted people living along Highway 166 between Twitchell Reservoir and the Carrizo Plain National Monument and the area east of Santa Margarita Lake and the Salinas River, PG&E said.

The shutoff was scheduled to occur between 8 a.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday.

Improvements in the weather caused PG&E to cancel the power shutoff on Thursday, the San Luis Obispo County Office of Emergency Services announced in a post on X.

Shutoffs are planned if the fire-weather forecast is severe enough that people’s safety, lives, homes and businesses may be in danger from wildfires, PG&E communications representative Neil Hebert told The Tribune on Wednesday.

Those weather conditions include low humidity levels, high winds, dry material on the ground and low moisture content in vegetation, he said.
