A motorcyclist suffered major injuries after colliding with an SUV on Highway 46 East on Friday, the California Highway Patrol said.

Just after 3 p.m., the motorcyclist was traveling westbound on Highway 46 when they crashed into a gray SUV near the Shandon Rest Area, the CHP traffic log said.

The crash destroyed the motorcycle, leaving it “in pieces” in the roadway, the CHP log said. The motorcyclist flew off the bike and landed in the westbound lane of the highway.

A helicopter was on its way to the scene of the crash as of 3:22 p.m., the CHP log said.

The person who called 911 to report the crash waited with a group of about 25 motorcycles, some parked on the roadside and others in the center divide of the highway.

The crash was backing up traffic in the area.
