16-year-old killed in late-night crash off Highway 1 in SLO County

Roadway fatality

A 16-year-old boy was killed in a late-night crash off Highway 1 near Cambria on Saturday.

According to a CHP news release, Eric Aguilar left his home in San Simeon around 9 p.m. driving his father’s truck. His destination was unknown.

After he left, his family went looking for him and the truck but were unsuccessful.

According to the CHP, it was possible the truck was taken without the owner’s permission.

On Sunday morning, emergency responders received reports of a possible vehicle over the side of Highway 1 north of Burton Drive in Cambria, according to the release. The vehicle landed approximately 100 feet over the edge of the highway and down an embankment where it was not visible from the road, according to the release.

When emergency crews arrived, family members were already at the scene and had located the crash.

According to the CHP, the truck hit several trees as it came off the road, causing “significant damage to the vehicle and fatal injuries to the driver.”

It is unclear what time the crash occurred though it was presumed to be late Saturday evening, the release said.

The CHP said the main cause of the crash appeared to be speed, and it was unknown if alcohol, drugs or distracted driving played a role.

The crash was under investigation and any witnesses were asked to contact the CHP at 805-400-6720 or 805-593-3333.
