Road linking Big Sur to Highway 101 is closer to reopening. Here’s the latest on repairs

Windy and narrow Nacimiento-Fergusson Road links the Big Sur coast to Highway 101. It’s the only access to the area with the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge failure and Mud Creek Slide on Highway 1 and had become an alternative spot for campers.

The road that connects Big Sur to Highway 101 is a big step closer to reopening after Caltrans completed the first phase of storm-damage repairs.

Monterey County’s Nacimiento-Fergusson Road — the only link between Highway 101 and Highway 1 along the Big Sur coast — was rendered nearly impassable to vehicle traffic in the winter storms of 2021 and 2022.

According to a release from Los Padres National Forest, the forest received nearly $8 million from the federal Highways Administration to replace culverts, stabilize slopes, clear rock slides and reinforce support structures along the road.

Plans call for the road to reopen in late summer, and the next phase of repairs consists of removing hazardous trees along the road and installing new signage, according to the release.

“We are grateful for the support of the FHWA in completing this first round of repairs as we work to reopen this critical east-west road,” Monterey District Ranger Fin Eifert said in the release. “The road remains closed as we concentrate on the remaining work needed to make the road safe for motorized travel.”
