San Luis Obispo High School students and staff sheltered in place after receiving a phone call about a “possible threat” against students off campus, the principal wrote in an email to parents Monday afternoon.

The school received the phone call at 3:31 p.m., San Luis Obispo High School Principal Rollin Dickinson said in the email.

The police department investigated the threat to determine its credibility, according to the email. The school and San Luis Coastal District Office both sheltered in place during the investigation.

“Everyone was safe,” Dickinson wrote in the email.

The threat was soon found not credible. Police found it was safe for students to exit campus and participate in extracurricular activities.

By 3:57 p.m., Dickinson sent an email to parents that the lockdown was lifted.

“We waited until we were absolutely certain of this,” he wrote in the second email. “We know these situations are stressful. The safety of our students and staff is essential.

San Luis Obispo Police Department did not immediately respond to request for comment.
