Another downtown business is shutting its doors for good, though you’ll have until after New Year’s to continue to peruse its shelves.

Marine Layer, a San Francisco-based clothing chain specializing in “absurdly soft shirts,” will close its location at 844 Monterey St. on Jan. 9, according to a sign posted in the window of the business Wednesday.

“Come say hey before we go,” the sign read. “And when you’re looking for something absurdly soft, we’ll see you on our site.”

Anyone needing help with orders, exchanges or returns was directed to email ohhey@marinelayer.com, according to the sign.

Marine Layer opened in downtown San Luis Obispo in 2016 as part of the Chinatown project on Monterey Street.

At the time, a brand manager told The Tribune the business only opened stores in areas they’re “excited to travel to.”

A request for comment from Marine Layer was not returned as of Thursday morning.

It was one of several new business to open in that area as part of the Copeland Properties-led development that still houses Francesca’s, H&M and Williams-Sonoma, among other businesses.

This is the latest in a string of closures for downtown shops and restaurants in recent months.

Mint+Craft, which was located just two doors down from Marine Layer, abruptly shuttered in October. That same month, Splash Cafe closed its spot on Monterey Street and Big Sky Cafe closed on Broad Street.

More recently, the Dough Connection on Court Street shuttered after only six months at that location.
