A Cambria resident was killed Monday morning when his 2005 Chevy Tahoe collided with an empty construction vehicle on Highway 1.

The driver, identified as 71-year-old Cambria resident Mark Seidel, was driving north on Highway 1 south of Hearst Castle at an unknown speed in light traffic around 8 a.m. Monday, according to a CHP news release.

For an unknown reason, Seidel veered right off of Highway 1 and crossed a wide dirt shoulder before crashing into an unoccupied Caterpillar asphalt compactor, the release said.

The impact of the collision caused the Tahoe to ricochet counterclockwise into a barbed wire cattle fence before it stopped facing west, the release said.

Seidel was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and died from his injuries, the release said.

The section of roadway was recently repaved and is in “excellent condition,” and the roadway conditions were “cool, clear, calm and dry,” the release said.

The crash remains under investigation, but the CHP said there is no indication that distracted driving or driving under the influence contributed to the crash.
