Atascadero police have identified the elderly man who was killed when he was hit by a pickup truck on El Camino Real last week.

Joel Chesler, a 79-year-old Atascadero resident, was crossing the street toward Vons from the west side of the roadway when he was struck by a vehicle on Sept. 26.

Chesler was treated at the scene and transported to Sierra Visa Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo with life-threatening injuries, police said.

He died on the way to the hospital.

El Camino Real was closed for several hours following the collision.

Terrie Banish, spokesperson for the city, told The Tribune that a pickup truck pulled out of the Vons parking lot and started to make a left turn onto El Camino Real when the collision occurred.

The driver remained on scene and has been cooperative with the investigation, she said.

“On behalf of the Atascadero Police Department, we extend our condolences to the Chesler family during this difficult time,” police said in the news release.

The department asks anyone with questions to contact the non-emergency dispatch line at (805) 461-5051.
