A woman was killed and a child injured Thursday night in a crash on Highway 58 east of Santa Margarita, according to California Highway Patrol.

A Bakersfield resident, 33, was driving a 2012 Cadillac SRX westbound on the highway at an unknown speed at about 8:10 p.m. when she lost control of the vehicle east of Parkhill Road, according to CHP Officer Patrick Seebart.

The vehicle careened off the roadway and tumbled down an embankment, he said.

The woman died in the crash, and her 10-year-old passenger sustained minor injuries, Seebart said.

Both the driver and the passenger were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, he said.

CHP has not determined if drugs or alcohol caused the crash. The incident is under investigation.
