Pedestrian struck, killed by SUV in Highway 101 crash in Pismo Beach

Pedestrian fatality

A 61-year-old man died Thursday night after being hit by an SUV on Highway 101 in Pismo Beach, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Carpenteria resident Mikaela Torres, 23, was driving a 2011 Nissan Murano on southbound Highway 101 north of Five Cities Drive at about 10:12 p.m. Thursday, the CHP said in a news release.

That’s when a pedestrian ran east directly into Torres’ path “in what appeared to be an attempt to run across the southbound lanes of traffic to the center median,” the CHP said.

Torres was “not able to avoid (the pedestrian) and hit him,” the agency said.

The pedestrian, who was not named in the release, died from his injuries, according to CHP.

Torres sustained major injuries in the fatal crash, and her vehicle was severely damaged, CHP said.

The CHP said the investigation in to the collision is ongoing.
