Power outage knocks out electricity to nearly 3,000 in San Luis Obispo

Power outage

Nearly 3,000 customers were briefly without electricity Wednesday evening due to a power outage in the San Luis Obispo area.

According to PG&E’s outage map, approximately 2,955 customers were without electricity as of 6:25 p.m. The outage impacted customers from downtown San Luis Obispo to Santa Margarita, according to PG&E.

PG&E spokesperson Carina Corral said as of 6:50 p.m., power had been restored to roughly 1,400 customers.

Corral added that the outage seemed to have been triggered by PG&E’s Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings, or EPSS, which allow the company’s power lines to automatically turn off power within one-tenth of a second when there is a hazard.

In this case, the hazard appeared to be a vehicle into a power pole, she said.

Corral said crews would start patrolling the line, looking for any hazards and making sure it’s safe to re-energize to restore power to all customers.

Electricity was fully restored just after 7 p.m.
