‘An incredible honor’: Arroyo Grande city manager departing for SLO city role
The city of Arroyo Grande will be in the market for a new city manager soon.
Whitney McDonald, who has served as Arroyo Grande’s city manager since 2020, will leave her role on July 31 to become San Luis Obispo’s new assistant city manager, according to a news release from the city.
“The city organization is strong,” Mayor Caren Ray Russom said in the release. “The city is grateful for Ms. McDonald’s commitment and contributions to the city of Arroyo Grande, and we wish her and her family the very best.”
McDonald was selected to fill the assistant city manager position in San Luis Obispo after a a “nationwide search.” The job will become available after current assistant city manager Shelly Stanwyck retires in August, according to a news release from the city of San Luis Obispo.
McDonald will assume the assistant city manager position Aug. 14, the release said.
“As assistant city manager, Whitney will play a vital role in implementing the city’s strategic vision and working closely with the city’s Leadership Team and other key stakeholders to achieve community goals,” San Luis Obispo city manager Derek Johnson said in the release. “Her ability to build strong relationships and foster partnerships will contribute to the continued success and progress in San Luis Obispo.”
The release said McDonald has demonstrated “exemplary dedication” to public service and a commitment to fostering quality communities.
In her new role, McDonald will oversee the city’s Community Services Group, including the departments of Public Works, Utilities, Community Development, and Parks and Recreation, the release said.
“Joining the city of San Luis Obispo as assistant city manager is an incredible honor,” McDonald said in the release. “I am excited to work alongside the dedicated team of professionals in serving this vibrant community. Together, we will continue to build upon San Luis Obispo’s legacy of sustainability, innovation, and high-quality services. I look forward to collaborating with community members and stakeholders to create positive and lasting impacts for all.”
