A structure fire forced residents to flee an apartment complex in San Luis Obispo on Friday, according to emergency services app Pulsepoint.

Multiple people evacuated the building at 1237 Southwood Drive, and the fire was extinguished around 12:20 p.m., according to the incident command.

Smoke could be seen rising out of two windows on the first floor of the two-story building, blackening the exterior walls. Incident command asked for fire investigators to determine the cause of the blaze.

San Luis Obispo Fire Department battalion chief Ray Hais said when his crews arrived at the scene of the fire, they found one building with “mild to moderate” smoke coming from within.

After assessing the building, the crew determined no one was in the smoking residence, and ensured the units to the left and right of the fire were clear, Hais said.

There was “minor smoke extension” into the unit to the right of the fire due to open windows, and only the main unit was damaged, he said.

“There’s not going to be anything salvageable,” Hais said. “Unfortunately for that resident, that’s probably going to be a total loss.

The Fire Department said no one was injured and asked people to avoid the area while crews worked to mop up.
