Pismo Beach Pier Plaza slides have closed permanently, city says

Pismo Beach is losing a unique attraction at its popular Pier Plaza, announcing that the slides down to the sand have been permanently closed.

“For the past six months, the slides have been closed due to coastal tides that caused the sand to recede at the base of the slide,” interim city manager Jorge Garcia said in news releast. “Additionally, pending litigation resulting from the repeated misuse of the slide left little choice but to permanently close this unique coastal amenity.”

Garcia said the city will look to evaluate other amenities and improvements in the area going forward.

In June 2021, two San Luis Obispo County women sued the city of Pismo Beach after they said they suffered spinal injuries on the concrete slides, which were installed in September 2020.

Both women sought damages to cover lost wages, medical bills and other damages.

In June 2021, attorney Jacqueline Frederick said the slides’ designers didn’t take people of all sizes into consideration when designing the structures, as adults could face a risk of hard landings on concrete on their tailbones.

Signs posted at the slides warn that the slides are designed for children between the ages of 5 and 12, and that falls could result in serious injury.
