Picture perfect: Pismo Beach unveils massive new light-up sign near Pier
Just in time for Labor Day weekend, Pismo Beach has unveiled a massive new sign and other improvements near the Pier that’s sure to make it the hottest selfie spot in the city.
The large light-up letters, which read “Pismo Beach,” went up a few weeks ago, but they’ve been blocked off from view while construction on the surrounding Pier Plaza was ongoing.
The barriers went down on Friday, and visitors were finally able to get an unobstructed view of the new neon landmark.
The freestanding letters, which tower 6 and a half feet tall, light up in different colors, according to Pismo Beach spokesman Jorge Garcia.
The structure features a ruler on the side of the “P” so that kids and families that visit can see how much they have grown since their previous visit to Pismo Beach, Garcia said.
The sign was part of an extensive re-haul of the Pier Plaza in recent months to make it more visitor friendly. The Pismo Beach Pier Plaza reconstruction cost $7.5 million, according to Garcia.
A new multi-colored whale-themed playground, shade structures and slides down to the beach have also been added to the Plaza. Bathrooms and Americans with Disabilities Act-approved access to the beach has also been updated.
The pier has reopened after being closed for recent months, along with three vintage Airstream trailers that house a concessions stand, a visitor information kiosk and the new Sheldon’s Bait Shack.
Officials urge visitors to Pismo Beach to stay physically distant and wear face coverings.
