Man fatally injured in fall from cliff at Pirate’s Cove, SLO County Sheriff’s Office says

A man visiting Pirate’s Cove was fatally injured falling down a cliff Wednesday evening.

According to San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Tony Cipolla, a man and a woman were sitting on the cliff in the area of Cave Landing Road overlooking the ocean around 5 p.m.

Cipolla said as the pair got up to leave, witnesses said the man slipped backward and fell, plunging about 200 feet over the side.

A possible cliff rescue was called into the SLO County Sheriff’s Office around 6:08 p.m.

Units arriving at the scene soon discovered what appeared to be an unconscious male down the side of the cliff in the area of the Pirate’s Cove parking lot, according to emergency scanner traffic.

At that time, emergency responders confirmed the man was deceased, Cipolla said.

The death appears to be accidental at this time, he added.

The San Luis Obispo County coroner’s unit was seen at the scene as crews attempted to retrieve the body.

Cal Fire was assisting the Sheriff’s Office in recovering the victim as of Wednesday evening, the agency tweeted.
