2 injured in motorcycle crash on Highway 101 in Atascadero

A motorcycle crash on Highway 101 in Atascadero injured two people on Thursday evening, California Highway Patrol said.

At about 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, Atascadero resident Jeffery Briggs, 37, was driving a 1998 Harley Davidson southbound on Highway 101, CHP Officer Patrick Seebart said.

According to Seebart, Briggs told CHP that his motorcycle suffered a mechanical failure near the San Ramon exit — throwing Briggs and his passenger off of the vehicle.

Briggs sustained minor injuries, and an ambulance transported him to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo, Seebart said.

His passenger, 25-year-old Templeton resident Lauren Nystrom, received a major head injury in the crash. Another ambulance transported her to the hospital, according to Seebart.

A friend of Briggs picked up the damaged motorcycle from the roadside, Seebart said.

No drugs or alcohol appear to be involved in the collision, according to Seebart. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, he said.
