A Cal Poly freshman died Monday, three days after he was involved a collision with a vehicle while riding his bicycle near the university, the San Luis Obispo Police Department said in a news release.

The cyclist, Sean Ogawa Hillman, 20, of Seattle, died of his injuries at about noon on Monday following the collision on Friday, police said.

A pickup truck collided with Hillman at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Fredericks Street at about 4:30 on Friday, police said.

The cyclist was critically injured in the crash and transported to the intensive care unit at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, where he died of his injuries, according to police.

The collision is still under investigation, and police do not know who was responsible for the crash.

“The driver of the truck remained at the scene and was cooperative with the investigation. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected as a factor in this collision,” police said in the news release.

Cal Poly student was studying architectural engineering

Hillman moved from Seattle to San Luis Obispo to study architectural engineering at Cal Poly’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design, the university said.

Cal Poly hosted a processing session for Hillman’s friends and family on Sunday night.

“We know that this incident may be traumatizing for members of our campus community, including those who may have witnessed it,” the university wrote.
