Paso Robles’ newest roundabout is almost ready to open after passing an important test: A really big truck had to drive around it.

In a video shared by the city in early April, Dave Spurr Excavating successfully drove a 107-foot truck and trailer around the unfinished roundabout at Golden Hill and Union roads.

According to the city, the test revealed that a few of the curbs in place needed to be lowered to accommodate a fully loaded extra-long trailer.

The roundabout was approved by the city as part of its Circulation Element in 2011.

Work on it began in August 2022.

The intersection has been closed throughout the construction, with motorists being directed to Ardmore Road instead.

People are also encouraged to use alternate routes such as Highway 46 “as often as possible when coming into town” to help alleviate traffic in the Ardmore neighborhood, according to the city website.

Overall, the truck test was deemed a success, the city said. The roundabout is expected to open in June.
