Grover Beach police responded to the scene of a reported fatal pedestrian-versus-train collision on Monday, Dec. 5, 2022.

The Grover Beach Police Department has identified the person who was killed by a train in early December, the department said in a news release Tuesday.

Arroyo Grande resident Ronald Frank Gupton, 55, was killed Dec. 5 around 5 p.m. when he was hit by an Amtrak train in Grover Beach, police said.

According to a news release shared on Twitter, security camera footage showed Gupton stepping off the platform and “onto the tracks to retrieve an object as the train approached.”

The collision was determined to be an accident, the release said.

“The Grover Beach Police Department extends our condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Gupton,” the release concluded.

The incident was the first of two fatal train collisions in the city that month.

On Dec. 27, another individual was struck and killed by a train near the 200 block of Highway 1. That person has not yet been identified.
