A vehicle struck and killed a horse on Wednesday morning in northern Santa Barbara County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver was traveling on Black Road north of Point Sal Road near Casmalia at 45 mph at about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday when his Audi A4 station wagon crashed into the horse, CHP Officer Maria Barriga said.

During the collision, the large animal partially entered the vehicle, injuring the driver.

He received “lacerations to his face, a broken nose and possibly broken ribs,” Barriga said.

The horse was killed in the crash and moved to the shoulder of the road, she said.

The driver left the scene of the crash and drove to his residence in Casmalia, Barriga said.

The driver was later transported to Marion Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria for treatment, according to Barriga.
