3 Paso Robles wines make list of top 100 to stash in your cellar, Wine Enthusiast says
Three wines from Paso Robles winemakers are featured on Wine Enthusiast’s top 100 cellar selections for 2022.
Assuming you have a cellar, or somewhere to store wine for later enjoyment as it matures, the wine magazines rates these as good picks.
Wine Enthusiast reviewers identified the top 100 cellar selections for 2022 using blind tastings. The top 100 must have already been selected as top-rated wines identified as good candidates for cellar aging.
2019 ‘Noble Intrigue’ syrah by Onx Wines
Coming in at No. 73 is “Noble Intrigue,” a 2019 Syrah fro Onx Wines that sells for $70 a bottle.
“Deep aromas of elderberry and açaí are dusted in herb and shaved game jerky on the nose of this bottling. The palate is complex and rather wild, jumping from kelp to elderberry jam to oak, while acidity drives through the vanilla finish. The wine will grow more seamless with time, so drink 2023 through 2033,” Wine Enthusiast contributor Matt Kettman wrote of “Noble Intrigue.”
The wine contains syrah grapes sourced from the Bien Nacido Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley, according to Onx Wines.
“To have a wine recognized to be one of the best in the world is nothing short of remarkable,” Onx Wines winemaker Drew Nenow said.
Nenow, co-founder of Nenow Family Wines in Paso Robles, had his family winery recognized as one of the 2022 best new wineries in the nation by USA Today.
2018 ‘Mountain Road Reserve’ cabernet sauvignon by Vina Robles
“Mountain Road Reserve,” the 2018 cabernet sauvignon by Vina Robles, is a 94-point wine that ranked 69 out of the 100 top cellar selections.
The wine sells for about $62 a bottle and could be delicious for the next two to 14 years, according to Wine Enthusiast.
“Ripe, inviting and juicy aromas of blackberry and milk chocolate draw the nose immediately into this bottling. Those rich qualities are quickly greeted with very sandy tannins on the palate, which give a firm structure to cassis and espresso bean flavors that will evolve over many years. Drink 2024-2038,” Kettman said in Wine Enthusiast.
2019 ‘Mayote Red’ red blend by Daou Vineyards
The Mayote Red by Daou Vineyards is a 97-point Bourdeaux-style red blend that ranked 32 on the list.
“Intense aromas of scorched earth, dark berry, cassis, graphite and toasted husk show on the nose of this blend of 49% cabernet franc, 34% merlot and 17% petit verdot. Perfectly firm tannins deliver flavors of rich cassis, nutty coffee bean, savory soy and a mineral-driven graphite on the palate. Drink now-2039,” Kettman saidt.
Pricier than the other Paso Robles options, the Mayote Red sells for about $125 a bottle.
