One person died and another was seriously injured Saturday in a head-on crash on Highway 41 in Atascadero.

Atascadero Police Department officers and the Atascadero Fire Department responded to the crash at Old Morro Road East at about 11:36 a.m., a news release stated.

Officers said the sole occupant of the first vehicle suffered fatal injuries.

“The identity of the victim is not being released at this time,” according to the report.

Police determined that the vehicle was going west on the highway when it crossed over the double yellow line into oncoming traffic. It collided head-on with a second vehicle going east, the report said.

The second driver suffered major injuries and was taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo.

A third vehicle going east swerved off the road to avoid the collision, but the driver lost control and the vehicle struck a telephone pole. That driver was uninjured, the report said.

The Atascadero police tweeted that Highway 41 was reopened at 2:17 p.m

If you witnessed the crash, please contact the Atascadero Police Department at 805-461-5051.
