CHP has released the name of the pedestrian killed on Highway 101 last week.

According to a news release Thursday, 30-year-old Amanda E. Figueroa of Santa Maria appeared to have been walking across the highway just south of the Tefft Street exit in Nipomo around 6:50 p.m.

At the same time, a Toyota — driven by 21-year-old Taylor Michio, of Santa Monica — was traveling northbound on the highway at about 70 miles per hour.

According to the release, Michio was following a different vehicle when that vehicle suddenly swerved to the right and Michio could see a pedestrian (later identified as Figueroa) directly in front of his car.

He swerved to the left to avoid hitting her, but Figueroa ran toward the center median and was struck, CHP said.

Figueroa sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead.
