The California Highway Patrol has identified a Caltrans employee who was hit by a vehicle and suffered serious injuries Friday afternoon on Highway 101 in San Luis Obispo County.

At about 1:30 on Friday afternoon, Alexander Ayala, 29, of Santa Maria was traveling southbound on Highway 101 just north of Highway 166 in a 2006 GMC Sierra.

For unknown reasons, Ayala allowed his truck to drift onto the right shoulder, where he sideswiped a Caltrans truck and hit Jose PerezHernandez, 42, of Santa Maria, according to the report.

PerezHernandez sustained major injuries and was transported via ambulance to Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria.

The collision caused traffic on the highway to back up in both directions while emergency workers responded to the scene.
