New road connecting southern SLO to Avila Ranch housing development opens
After weeks of work, the Buckley Road extension in San Luis Obispo opened to the public on Friday afternoon.
The extension, which connects the existing Buckley Road with South Higuera Street, is designed to help eliminate traffic issues at the Vachell Lane and South Higuera Street intersection, according to a city news release.
The Vachell intersection was previously the only connection to Buckley Road, and thus one of the only connections to Highway 227 on the opposite side of San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport.
It was also prone to collisions and traffic congestion.
With the addition of the new Buckley Road extension, drivers will no longer be able to make left turns in or out of the Vachell intersection, according to the release.
Those needing to make left turns from Higuera Street will need to take the Buckley Road extension south of Los Osos Valley Road.
The new extension will also help improve east-west circulation in the city and act as a connection to the new Avila Ranch housing development being built at the southeastern edge of the city.
The Avila Ranch development is expected to bring up to 720 single-family homes and apartments to a 150-acre site north of Buckley Road.
The project also includes 15,000 square feet of neighborhood-serving retail and office space next to a park, as well as the preservation of agricultural uses and open space.
