30-foot geyser erupts after car crashes into fire hydrant in Arroyo Grande
A crash Sunday night in Arroyo Grande sheared off a fire hydrant, sent a plume of water shooting 30 feet in the air and left a car on its rooftop.
Arroyo Grande Police Sgt. Dave Culver said the single-vehicle crash occurred around 11 p.m. in front of FrutiLand La Casa del Sabor. A vehicle appears to have crashed into a fire hydrant and overturned in front of the restaurant at the intersection of Rena Street and Grand Avenue.
Immediately after the crash, water was shooting in a large, roughly 30-foot plume from the damaged hydrant and flooding the street. The water was turned off by 11:40 p.m., according to a Tribune reporter at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries, according to Culver.
Culver said police have opened a DUI investigation to determine whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
FrutiLand owner Jose Rojas said damage to the restaurant was minimal — some water in the building and maybe some superficial damage, he told The Tribune.
