Need affordable housing in SLO? Here’s how to apply for new apartment complex
Applications are now open for a new affordable housing complex in San Luis Obispo, according to People’s Self-Help Housing.
The application period for those interested in living at the organization’s new Broad Street Place opened Monday. Applications can be submitted by emailing bsp@pshhc.org or at the organization’s website, pshhc.org/new-housing, according to a People’s Self-Help news release.
“As construction on Broad Street Place enters these exciting final stages, we are gearing up for the property to open,” Ken Trigueiro, People’s Self-Help CEO and president, said in the release. “We hope those who have been long awaiting new affordable housing in San Luis Obispo can submit their applications and find a new place to call home.”
The new property contains 40 residential apartments split across studios and floor plans with as many as three bedrooms per unit, the release said.
Ten units will go to unhoused veterans, while others will be Americans with Disabilities Act-certified for tenants with mobility, vision and hearing limitations.
Other amenities include a shared community room and kitchen, barbecue space, outdoor patios, covered bike parking, electric vehicle charging stations and laundry facilities.
Eligibility for the new development will be based on “income requirements, occupancy limits and other property-specific criteria,” according to the release. Section 8 housing vouchers will also be accepted.
How much will apartments in new SLO housing development cost?
In an interview with The Tribune a week before the applications opened, Trigueiro said People’s Self-Help’s rent subsidization is based on a household’s monthly earnings.
“It’s all over the place, depending in what (tenants) make,” he said. “Take that amount of earnings, times about 30%, and boom, that’s the housing costs.”
Trigueiro said the organization aims to make some units available for extremely low-income buyers, with rents as low as $300 for qualifying buyers, though he did not explain how those extremely low-income allotments will be determined.
Once extremely low-income buyers are more financially stable, they will live under the same 30% income rent that most tenants at People’s Self-Help units pay.
Trigueiro said at their highest, rents will be around $1,000 to $1,100 a month, with a median rent “in the neighborhood” of $700 to $800.
