San Luis Obispo City Council member Michelle Shoresman will run for election in November, in a bid to keep the seat to which she was appointed last year.

Shoresman joined the council in October 2021 to fill the vacant seat created when then-Vice Mayor Erica Stewart became mayor. (Stewart, who replaced Heidi Harmon as mayor, has also announced she is running for re-election).

Shoresman is now seeking a full, four-year term on the City Council and will appear on the Nov. 8 election ballot, according to a news release from her campaign Wednesday. She is running for one of two open council seats in the November election.

“SLO has been my home for over 20 years,” Shoresman said in the release. “I was honored to be appointed to the City Council, and I’ve loved every minute of serving my community in this new way.”

Prior to her appointment, Shoresman served on the city’s Planning Commission.

Perhaps most notably, she has served as the public voice of the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department throughout the coronavirus pandemic. She also currently serves on the San Luis Obispo County Pension Trust Board.

“At Cal Poly in the ’90s, I learned that getting involved is the way to make things happen; collaboration and listening are key; and diversity of opinion matters. I have kept these principles in focus in my time thus far on council,” Shoresman said in the release. “I pledge to continue to follow them, should the voters choose me for another term.”

Shoresman will launch her campaign with an event in front of San Luis Obispo City Hall on May 18 at 12:30 p.m., according to the release.
