The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office has identified two “suspicious devices” found Sunday night in a public restroom at the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport, prompting an evacuation.

The agency received a report from airport security about the devices at approximately 11:20 p.m., according to a Monday news release from the Sheriff’s Office.

“The airport was immediately evacuated as a precaution,” the release said.

The San Luis Obispo County Bomb Task Force was then deployed to the scene and identified the devices as inert practice mortars, meaning there was no explosive devices inside the mortar shells, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The items were recovered and the airport was searched, the release said.

After about 30 minutes, it was determined that there was no threat to the public and airport employees and visitors were allowed back inside, according to the release.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Tony Cipolla said the detectives are continuing to investigate who placed the practice mortars in the airport bathroom and why.
