Possible explosive device found in SLO airport restroom
The Sheriff’s Office responded to report of a possible explosive device at the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport late Sunday night, but determined the item was not live.
Around 11:20 p.m., airport security called the sheriff to report what they thought was some kind of explosive device in one of the restrooms, watch commander Sgt. Sandra Arauza told The Tribune.
They asked the Sheriff’s Office to assess the situation, and a technician from the Bomb Task Force responded with a K9 unit, Arauza said.
The deputy evaluated the item and determined it wasn’t a live explosive device. It’s unclear what the device was, although the SLO County News Facebook group reported two apparent mortar rounds were discovered.
The airport wasn’t locked down during the investigation but all the employees were asked to exit the building, Arauza said.
After the item was determined not to be a threat, a late arriving flight landed as normal, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies left the scene at around 1 a.m.
