Update: One person found dead in mobile home fire in Nipomo

One person has been found dead after a fire destroyed a mobile home in Nipomo Wednesday afternoon.

Adan Orozco, Cal Fire spokesman, said the person was discovered deceased at the scene after a call for dispatch came in at 2:51 p.m. about a fire at a home in the 1200 block of Hetrick Avenue.

The incident location is near the intersection of Summit Station Road, north of the Willow Road exit.

It’s unclear if the person who died is the homeowner. The person has not yet been identified, but neighbors said a man in his 70s lived at the residence.

A neighbor last saw the man who lived there on Feb. 14; family was on scene as officials continue to investigate.

As of 3:45 p.m., firefighters contained the blaze to the mobile home and one outbuilding.

“Firefighters will be on scene approximately two hours for mop-up,” a Cal Fire Twitter post noted.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, Orozco said. Cal Fire/San Luis Obispo County Fire, the Five Cities Fire Authority and the Santa Maria Fire Department all responded to the blaze.

Witness account

Sahvannah Biven, 23, had just finished cooking pesto pasta when she smelled gas.

She thought she had left her burner on but then saw her neighbor’s home engulfed in flames and his tree on fire as well. She ran to grab her 18-month-old son and drove away from the fire while telling Siri to call 911.

As she was driving her son down the driveway she heard a loud boom followed by a smaller boom and saw a ton of black smoke. She cannot find her cat but thinks the cat is probably hiding under her house.

Multiple SLO county fires

The incident marks yet another fatal fire in San Luis Obispo County this month.

One person was killed in an apartment fire in Arroyo Grande on Feb. 15 when a person was trapped inside near the 500 block of Ide Street.

Then, Jorgi Coy-Epperly died in a RV fire at the county’s Safe Parking Facility on Kansas Avenue on Feb. 16.
