One person died in an apartment fire in Arroyo Grande on Tuesday evening, as police officers battled the blaze themselves while waiting for the fire department to arrive.

First responders received a call about a structure fire with a person trapped inside near the 500 block of Ide Street in Arroyo Grande around 10:20 p.m, the Arroyo Grande Police Department said on Facebook.

According to a second statement by Five Cities Fire Authority, police officers responded first, fighting the fire with fire extinguishers until the Fire Authority arrived.

Officers were able to extinguish the fire upon arrival at the scene, but unable to save the person trapped inside, the Police Department’s statement said.

“We thank the Five Cities Fire Authority who was able to prevent the fire from reigniting and spreading through the apartment complex,” the statement said.

Cal Fire San Luis Obispo assisted with the response, according to Five Cities Fire Authority. The cause of the fire is unknown and an investigation is underway.

This was the second deadly fire in San Luis Obispo County on Tuesday. Early that same morning, a woman was killed in San Luis Obispo while trapped in a burning RV.
