A small fire sparked at an Atascadero bank on Thursday afternoon, prompting an evacuation and burning a portion of the building.

Atascadero Fire and Emergency Services responded about 1 p.m. to a fire at the Union Bank in the 7100 block of El Camino Real, a news release said.

Crews found heavy smoke coming from the back corner of the building and eventually found that a portion of the heating and ventilation system was burning, the release said.

Firefighters used a ladder truck and four engines to contain the fire within 25 minutes. Atascadero police also responded and evacuated three employees who were unaware of the fire.

No one reported injuries, and the fire didn’t damage any other properties.

Crews remained at the bank for 90 minutes to completely extinguish the fire in the heating and ventilation unit. Investigators are still determining the cause of the fire.
