Huge military planes are flying over SLO County. Here’s what’s going on
Two massive military planes performed low-flying training missions in the skies above San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties on Thursday.
While officials aren’t saying much, a Fort Hunter Liggett spokesperson confirmed the training took place.
The flight-tracking website Flightrader 24 showed two large military planes — a U.S. Air Force Stratotanker and a McDonnell KC-10A Extender — flying at low altitude about 2 p.m. throughout San Luis Obispo County and into Santa Barbara County.
The Stratotanker was flying at 1,100 feet; the McDonnell was at about 3,000 feet, according to the Flightrader 24 site.
“I can confirm that it was out of our base and this was a standard military training,” Akuaha Moreno, a Fort Hunter Liggett spokesperson, said of the flights.
Moreno said she didn’t have additional information beyond confirming the planes were part of the military training operation.
Fort Hunter Liggett is located in southern Monterey County in Jolon.
Meanwhile, a person on Nextdoor posted video of two other military planes taking off from San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport on Wednesday, with the caption, “Some big boys departing SLO airport yesterday afternoon.”
Those two large propeller planes were different than the Fort Hunter Liggett jets flying Thursday.
