Highway 1 is once again closed between SLO County and Big Sur thanks to another storm sweeping across the area.

Caltrans announced Wednesday evening that the highway is closed between Ragged Point and Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn in Monterey County “due to rockfall and adverse weather conditions.”

According to the National Weather Service, the Big Sur area has received more than 2 inches of rain in the past 24 hours, as of 9 p.m. One location, Mining Ridge, reported 3.54 inches of rainfall in that time period.

Caltrans said field staff will assess the location in the daylight Thursday morning and evaluate when it might reopen the road.

This is the second time in as many weeks that the highway has been shuttered at those points.

Caltrans preemptively shut down the road on Dec. 12 ahead of a winter storm, and then extended that closure for a day after small rockslides blocked the highway at several points. It reopened Dec. 15.

More rain is expected to sweep across the region throughout the rest of the week, bringing with it the possibility of more rockfalls along the highway as well as the potential for a lengthier closure.
