Surfers shred waves in Pismo Beach at world’s largest para surfing championship
Hundreds of surfers, coaches, trainers and more descended upon Pismo Beach this week, as the world’s largest international para surfing competition got underway.
The 2021 International Surfing Association World Para Surfing Championship is being held in the South County city through Dec. 11.
The championships will bring together athletes from around the world to “showcase their talents in a Paralympic-style, world championship competition,” according to the event’s website.
Para surfing, also known as adaptive surfing, allows individuals with physical disabilities to surf.
The ISA has hosted its championship since 2015 and boasts that the competition is the largest adaptive surfing world championship in the world.
“We are so stoked to have these future Paralympians here in our amazing beach community and to have our community be so involved,” AmpSurf wrote in a news release announcing the event in November.
AmpSurf, which supports people with disabilities through adaptive surfing and other outdoor activities, is the official host of the championship this year.
This will be the first time the event is held outside the San Diego area.
The event featured surf clinics over the weekend, and competition officially began on Tuesday.
Throughout the week, people can also visit the event’s Surf and Sports Therapy Village, where organizations and companies will showcase their programs, according to the release.
